Rudraprayag district was
established on 16th September 1997. The district was carved out from the
following areas of three adjoining districts i.e. Whole of Agastyamuni &
Ukhimath block and part of Pokhri & Karnaprayag block from Chamoli
district, part of Jakholi and Kirtinagar block from Tehri Garhwal district and
part of Khirsu block from Pauri Garhwal district. It has an average elevation
of 895 metres. The geographical area of the district is around 2328 sq km.
Rudraprayag is one of the PanchPrayag (five confluences) of Alaknanda River ,
the point of confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. Rudraprayag is
located at a distance of about 141 km by road (NH-58) from the nearest
rail-head being Rishikesh, and 165 km from Haridwar.
